West Jordan Oral Surgery
What is an Oral Surgeon?
Oral surgery is one of only nine dental specialties the American Dental Association (ADA) recognizes as a form of dental care requiring extensive post-doctoral education and training. Oral surgeons acquire extensive additional training in general surgery, pathology, dental occlusion, anesthesia, periodontology, and pain management. To become an oral surgeon, a dentist must have an additional four to six years of training and pass a rigorous exam.
Dr. Urban received his oral surgery training and experience through some of the country’s finest teaching hospitals and universities, including Harvard School of Dental Medicine and the Mayo Clinic School of Medicine. He is recognized as one of the country’s top oral and maxillofacial surgeons. Dr. Urban is board certified by the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, an honor extended only to surgeons who have demonstrated an exceptional understanding of the form, function, and esthetics of the face, jaw, teeth, and mouth.
Why See an Oral Surgeon for Dental Work?
Dentists are ideal for routine dental care and many types of cosmetic dental work that do not require surgery, such as simple tooth extractions or dentures. However, they do not regularly perform more complex procedures, such as wisdom teeth removal, reducing their proficiency and effectiveness. Even a slight change or unexpected complication can cause serious problems when working on your teeth, gums, or jaw. Dr. Urban’s in-depth understanding of dental and facial structures ensures every oral surgery procedure is performed with finesse and minimal impact on surrounding tissues.
When surgery is needed, an oral surgeon is always your best option. Oral surgery requires an in-depth understanding of the complexity of the relationships between the jawbone, soft tissues, gums, and facial structure. Dr. Urban performs complex oral surgery procedures regularly, calling on his extensive training and experience to consider each patient’s oral health and esthetic goals. Years of additional experience and knowledge of how the face, jaw, and oral structures work together ensure even the most invasive oral surgeries are handled with professionalism and expertise.

Are All Oral Surgeons Medical Doctors?
No. All oral surgeons receive at least four additional years of training following dental school and must pass a certification exam. However, Dr. Urban is both a dentist and a medical doctor, having obtained his MD from the Mayo Clinic School of Medicine. This rare combination of dental, medical, and surgical training gives him an unusual understanding of how dental and facial structures work together, ensuring superior results.
